You see the Ill-Behaved Woman? Very Mindful. Very Demure.
There's nothing outre about backing Kamala Harris rn, but damn if it doesn't feel GREAT.
Wow, was I having a hard time working yesterday. The beautiful Chicago air was ELECTRIC with anticipation of the evening to come, night one of the DNC 2024. I spent much of the day maybe wandering the streets, hoping we’d bump into you-know-who at a convenience store eating Doritos. I mean, who could resist this dog in the harness that matches the hat?
But it was not to be. I got a pretty good show though. What a future we have to look forward to…
And those stories of women impacted by the right to choose… What a night. Thank you all for carrying this torch.
One thing I did do, however, was obsessively watch my promotion for Florida Girls BLOW UP! I “sold” 925 copies yesterday, more books in one day than ever in my career.
What’s that? Why “sold” in quotes?
Because they’re free! And you can go nab a copy of the ebook right now too. Just click this. Think of it as my big “I went mad for the DNC 2024” sale.
I’ve also been working furiously on the audiobook for Florida Girls. It will be available soon, thank you for asking about it! And thank you for reading.
As promised, I’ll post a how-to audiobook class for paid subscribers, updating my DIY workshop (a how-to if you’re going to narrate and produce) to offer tips on how-to get your audiobook to the finish line when working with a narrator.
Just as soon as the Florida Girls audiobook is complete. I have learned some things!
What I’m reading…
Currently switching between:
Check out the ones on the right. Havana Nocturne is an astonishing look back at post-revolutionary Cuba, Husbands & Lovers is a Beatriz Williams dual timeline love story, and Katharine, the Wright Sister is an eye opening look at battles I never knew went on. Bonus, I get to interview Tracey Enerson Wood about this at her book launch on September 10 at Tombolo Books. RSVP here!
Books I don’t love, why mention?
What I’m watching:
Yes, I subscribed to Starz just for this, and it is worth it. The writing is exceptional! I’m even listening to the nonfiction audiobook it’s based on!
Now, let’s talk about some things
Trump going all in on lonely young dudes who hate women. Why else would his people be brandishing faux sperm samples labeled “J.D. Vance full family kit?” I mean, what’s weird about brandishing somebody else’s jizz? It’s normal like wearing diapers (lest we forget Michael Cohen’s X beef with with the current GOP candidate (“Hey Von ShitzInPantz…your attacks of me stink of desperation.”), or the sanitary pads on the ears. Do you think he wants to lose?
Meanwhile, President Joe Biden continues to be all in on women. He’s creating a national monument honoring Frances Perkins, the first female Cabinet secretary and a fierce advocate for workers’ rights, to be built in Maine. Did you catch his tribute to Dr. Jill Biden at the DNC?
Julia Louis-Dreyfus is hosting a panel at the DNC with the country’s 8 Democratic women governors. I can’t help but wish she’d do it as her VEEP character. SNL, are you listening???
Childless cat ladies wipe away their tears with cash. Sure, it’s cute. But I didn’t become a childless cat or dog lady for the cash. Still say, you don’t need a reason.
An epic Threads response to J.D. Vance’s comment that the point of the post-menopausal woman is grandchild care, where women offer up their actual contributions, post-menopause. And while I went through it ungodly early, the best things I’ve done in my life have absolutely been post-menopausal.
And finally, Matthew Perry’s enablers face murder charges? Sure, I have opinions on all these, but here goes… As a GenXer who has been in recovery since I was 19, I’ve avoided commenting on the whole Matthew Perry overdose situation, mostly because it’s terribly sad and complex. But the idea that the people around him are being charged with his death is too much. Were those people jerks? Yes. Have I heard worse stories of addicts being taken advantage of? Absolutely. I’d wager they no more wanted their source of income cut off than Perry wanted his drugs cut off.
Have you ever tried to keep an addict away from their substance? Good luck.
This isn’t a case of being hospitalized and given too much of a drug. The man was using at home for his own purposes.
(I wrote pleasure, but anyone who’s been in that kind of despair knows there’s no pleasure left.)
Take it from me, he would’ve found the drugs.
I say this as someone who has also heard people in the medical community say awful, disparaging things about addicts, whom they’ve had to treat time and again for damage those addicts have inflicted upon themselves and others. Addiction is not a sympathetic disease. Likewise, recovery is not possible unless we accept our part in the mess we’ve made. Shucking the blame on Perry’s enablers is, to me, counterintuitive. Charge his doctors with falsifying records, strip their medical licenses. But murder charges?
What do you think?
Until next time!
